Ten Facts About Your Character:
- To tell the truth, Yao is a relative success story. His parents worked abroad, having to leave him alone at home to care for himself from a tender age. Despite this, he still tried to attend school to the best of his ability, making the two mile-long trek by foot everyday. He received regular amounts of money in the mail, and taught himself how to cook. However, eventually, when Yao hit the age of fourteen, the little envelopes with the neatly folded bills and handwritten letters stopped arriving. What was he to do?
- The house was taken away by the government and Yao had to fend for himself on the streets. He took up the practice of setting up a small stand on the roadside and offering "fortune-telling" services. His predictions usually didn't come true, but seeing as he had always been superstitious, he could be awfully convincing. At least, he managed to make enough to scrap along. School had been placed into the backseat, though he tried his best to study on his own when he had the time.
- A year later, when he was fifteen, he came across another boy, younger than he, with a quiet demeanor and darkened eyes. Yao felt pity for the one that was so new to the world of living on the streets, and so, he took the other boy under his wing. Yao taught him the tricks of the trade--everything from how to snag a bit more money from customers to the best place to buy meatbuns cheaply. Yao grew to love the other boy like a brother, and he felt happy. However, things had to come to an end. Yao never knew how the boy had gotten hold of a knife, but one slash, and he was gone--with all of the savings Yao had earned since.
- These events caused Yao to go into a depression at age sixteen. The wound on his back took ages to heal, though the elderly couple down the street were kind enough to give him bandages to help with staunching the blood. It was then he came across something new. Something to numb the emptiness he felt. Opium. From the very first puff, he was hooked--the drug filling his lungs and entering his bloodstream and dulling his senses. It felt like release from the world that seemed to hate him so much.
- He took to transporting cases of the drug as a job, receiving small amounts as payment as well as money from the dealers. It was enough to keep him going for another year. He left the village to work at this new "job", running case after case to strange people who spoke different tongues and had hair that looked like wheat waving in the wind. Yao managed to keep out of the darker side of the business for a while, until that one day where he witnessed a man giving up his own child to a stranger with thick eyebrows in order to receive several cases of the drug. He can still remember the boy's face--emotionless. Yao never found out what happened to that boy, but witnessing it awakened him to reality. He quit the business, escaping with only a few more scars, and he quit the drug--accepting reality at last.
- It was after this (age eighteen), that he came across another stray on the street--a girl this time, just slightly younger than he. Despite the inherent doubt that seemed to stem from the scar on this back, he took her in anyway, out of pity and loneliness. After a time, she left as well, silently and as gently as she had entered into his life. Yao did not mind, however, more happy that she was planning to forge a better life for herself. It planted a seed into his head.
- It was after the girl's departure that Yao decided that he finally had to do something with his life. He managed to snag a job at a restaurant, working long-hours during the day and studying at night. It was one of the toughest years of his life, to be honest, but also one of the most rewarding. His skills at cooking improved, and he started to apply for schools outside of his native China. One of the most interesting days that he had during this time, however, was not involved in study. He had been taking the order of a couple sitting at table three, when...he spotted a familiar man with thick eyebrows accompanied by a familiar looking boy with no expression on his face. They had just walked in. Yao was too surprised and nervous to take their order. They left just as uneventfully.
- It was at age twenty when he finally hit an up in his life. A small, unassuming letter had arrived in the mail. An acceptance letter. To a school in Boston, Massachusetts---in America. It was surprising, really, but Yao had no complaints as all the other schools he had applied for had fallen through. With a flourish of a pen and the licking of a stamp, the reply was sent back; and Yao had a new spring in his step when he worked the early-morning shift. He began to study English with the same fervor as he did before.
- After counting and recounting the money needed to hop onto a plane in America, Yao was finally ready. From the cab ride to the airport to the first step onto the plane, he had had no regrets. And he still has none. He was finally on his way to becoming someone, and that's all that mattered.
- His personality: Even with the hardship he has endured, Yao still tries to remain as positive as possible. Perhaps, this part of him was shaped by his past. He's straightforward and tries his hardest to act mature, even though his heart aches for the childhood that he lost.
He has a strong dislike when things get out of hand, and enjoys having order in his life, despite not being particularly organized himself. Rushing is never a thought for him, and each thing he does is neat and time-consuming, to a certain degree. There is many a time when he just feels like doing nothing, and he has a hard time keeping priorities straight. For example, eating well is usually at the top of his list when it comes to things to do, and he loves to try new flavors and tastes. Oddly enough though, it seems like none of this shows on his body, not gaining a single ounce, even after a large meal and a nap. He places this stroke of luck on drinking tea before and after and during a meal, though it's doubted if it's really true.
He keeps a few hobbies with him, one of them being the reading and appreciation of fine literature. Yao is and probably will be forever amazed by how people are so capable of weaving words into intricate thoughts. He also practices tai chi and other martial arts in his spare time, little things he picked up from his time on the street from kind neighbors that were looking for a sparring partner.
However, all this aside, his dearest wish is to do well at school and become the best nation he can be.
A secret he/she wouldn't want anyone to learn about: He has a rather large penchant for cute things, and as such, has quite a large collection of Hello Kitty related items. As a result, he allows no one to visit his dorm. It's rather embarrassing, you see.
Favorite Color: Red. It's lucky in China.
Anything else?: Um. I should think that I'm fairly fluent in Chinese; though, I fear that my written Chinese is less than perfect. -Sweatdrop.- I can try my best, though! I'm definitely looking forward to RP-ing here.
If there're any mistakes in this, I blame it all on writing the app at two-in-the-morn'. Haha. XD Also. Er. I-I'm a novelist at heart. -Headdesk.- Writing all that was mainly just to clear up his personal history and to make his personality well-defined for myself. Er. I hope it's no issue.
Regardless, if there are any mistakes in this application, feel free to tell me! I'm actually not too sure if I managed to grasp the concept of this RP, yet. But, um. Please let me know if there are errors. It would be much appreciated. -Bow, bow.-
